Dear Subscriber,

Building successful teams is always a tricky business. The temptation is to try and find people with the same personality and skills as your own, because that is least likely to cause conflict. However, if you adopt this approach the reality is you will create an unbalanced team, because your skills, while important, do not complete the picture. You need the right mix of both skills and characters.

We teach this in the many workshops we run on team building, and recently we have been recruiting for a new member to join our team here at Inspire Change. This provided the perfect opportunity to review the whole team composition, and identify how we have evolved in recent years and where our strengths and weaknesses now lie.

To achieve an accurate and unbiased approach, we use an online product produced by Belbin (those of you who have done one-to-one coaching with us will be familiar with Belbin) which is scary in how accurate it is! Imagine a close family member or life-long friend describing you.

Intrigued to know what sort of a team player you are? Well, for the first five who email me with Belbin in the subject line, we'll fund completely the costs for you completing your Belbin analysis; also, one of our Belbin accredited experts will talk you through your profile report, so that you can understand the contribution you could make to a team or working party (invaluable if you are shortly attending an interview). So get emailing!
