Albert Einstein said "It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer." And Thomas Foxwell Buxton wrote "With ordinary talent and extraordinary perseverance, all things are attainable."
To be able to get results in the face of enormous obstacles is a unique human achievement and we're very good at it – the evidence is everywhere. The pyramids, the castles, the canals, the molecules, the Human Genome, the London Underground, even the Internet (remember how frustratingly slow it used to be, but we didn’t turn our backs on it).
What will you persevere with today? A difficult colleague? A piece of research? A burgeoning workload or simply family members?
What can you do if you recognise that you need to persevere with something or someone and you keep giving up? Picture what the end result will look like in the future and work backwards, one step at a time until you reach today. Then start your journey, moving forward one step at a time towards your vision. Remember that if you need a rest, giving in doesn’t mean giving up!
