Dear Subscriber
How many meetings do we attend where we end up feeling angry because the end is delayed by too many items brought up as 'Any other Business'?
We think you should not allow AOB on the Agenda. AOB is for lazy people, who cannot be bothered to contact the Chair and have items properly considered for the agenda in advance.

AOB is sometimes considered a useful slot for urgent things that need to be discussed. If this is true we recommend that if you keep AOB on the agenda, you have a group rule that 'Items for AOB must be submitted by email to the Chair no less than 24 hours before the meeting'.

Adopting our suggested group rule has the same practical effect as banning AOB, as the lazy people who didn't do their meeting preparation properly will almost never contact the Chair in advance. Be strong, if these members of the group come up to you just before the meeting starts with 'I know I should have put this in an email to you, but can we discuss it today anyway...' The answer is NO. Give it a try and make your meetings shorter and more effective.
