This week saw the largest amount of snowfall in the UK for over twenty years, resulting in 1 in 5 taking a "Snow Day" from work. The estimated impact on the economy was over £150billion in lost work and costs etc. Some professions came under attack for not having enough grit to battle into work, whilst others worked tirelessly without recognition to keep the wheels turning.

Some stress is a positive thing in our lives; it drives us on to a goal, helps us get through a difficult time and is largely positive. When this tips over into being overwhelming, making us feel out of control and unable to function properly, it’s known as distress.

How do you cope with unplanned events and can you learn anything from your own experiences this week? Was it an opportunity to enjoy some quality time with the family or was being cooped up at home a horrible experience, leaving you with an insane desire to hike twelve miles in any direction?

Understanding what drives you and what contributes to your own responses in any given situation is a good start. There is plenty of information on recognising and dealing with stress available on the Internet. As a healthcare professional you need additional support to understand your personal drivers and to be able to coach and respond to others in a positive way. Most of you will have been through our courses so this is a good time to dig out your Inspire Change workshop binder and re-visit some of the coping tools and behaviour insights that you learnt about. Remember the DESC script? How to ask for a behaviour change in an assertive way?
