Interview Preparation
One of the most important interviews you will ever experience is the one which leads to your appointment in a substantive post. Faced with that fact, what can you do at interview to impress the Panel and convince them to appoint YOU? What are they looking for from you? There are 5 main reasons why panels appoint; they are:
- Candidate would fit in
- Is keen and enthusiastic
- Wants the job (seriously!)
- Would bring something new or different to the post/department
- I'd be happy to be their patient
So, how can you “tick all those boxes” above?
Top Tips From Successful Candidates
If you’ve done your research comprehensively on the post/department/hospital, you’ll be well on the way to impressing at interview.
Here are some other tips from successful candidates to help tick the boxes:
- Go and visit the Unit before being shortlisted for interview
- Ask everyone you visit - "Who else should I talk to about the post/Unit?"
- Write the executive summary of your CV/Application Form after you've visited the Unit
- Ask Inspire Change to check your CV before submission
- Remember, it's no good just being "good at your job"; all the shortlist will be top candidates
- Impress the Panel with your answers, attitude and overall performance
- The department/ hospital/Trust will spend a lot to appoint the right candidate; you need to convince them you are that candidate
Panel Member Feedback
Here’s an interesting perspective from a recent Panel Member: “Everyone in front of me can do the job – that’s why they’ve been shortlisted. I know what they can do, but I’m interested in what they can do differently”
Finally, remember: the real question every Panel Member is asking is “Why are you the best candidate for this job?” If you can answer that question succinctly and impressively, you’re in with more than just a shout!
