On the
27th of March 1977 on the runway at Tenerife, a voice
from the cockpit said “KLM 4805 we are at take
off”. So began a chain of events which culminated
in the world’s worst aviation disaster in which
583 people died.
Yet
today, the risk of dying on a scheduled aircraft
flight is 1 in 10 million. By contrast, the risk
of dying in hospital as a result of medical error
is 1 in 300, (according to Sir Liam Donaldson – Chief
Medical Officer), which means you are 33,000 times
more at risk in hospital than taking a scheduled airline
flight.
Ever
since the Tenerife disaster the aviation world has
addressed the human error problem in aircraft accidents
through implementation of CRM (Crew Resource Management).
What
can you as a medical professional learn from the
aviation industry and CRM?
On
the 27th of March 2007, Inspire Change is running
the first of a series of pioneering workshops in
Central London highlighting Crew Resource Management
and its applications in medicine. To learn more about
