At Inspire Change we run workshops and facilitate meetings for many senior healthcare professionals including Medical Directors, Clinical Directors and other lead clinicians, as well as Chief Executives, Chief Pharmacists and others. Often during the workshop, which could be on any subject, such as 'Writing a successful bid to a PCT' or 'Our future service- how will we deliver in the next five years?' the topic of discussion comes round to Consultant Interview panels, as that is something everyone present has in common. Chatting over lunch or a coffee break, we always ask the same question: 'What one quality is it you see in a candidate that makes you want to offer them the post?' Interested in the answers?

The top 5 answers given by the experts

  1. Must be able to fit into the team
  2. Keen/Enthusiastic
  3. Must bring something to the party (i.e. something that is new that drives our service forward)
  4. I would be happy to send my patients to them
  5. They have the right skill mix

Over the last few years, we have noticed that number 3 on the list has been mentioned more often, but by far the top scorer overall is far and away number 1- must fit in.

if we want a post as a Consultant, currently, your CV is possibly full of your surgical and clinical expertise, but may not have enough on how well you work in a team, and how you have helped to improve services where you have worked. Notice that 'skilled clinician' is nowhere in the top 5. We have asked this question, and the answer most often comes back 'we assume they have that anyway' or 'we wouldn't have shortlisted them if they weren't that.'
